How to Install a Dock Ladder – RDS Dock Hardware

Dock ladders are an essential dock accessory if you or your family and friends plan to spend any time in the water as they make getting in and out of the water safer and more convenient.

When choosing a dock ladder, there are a few styles to consider. Stationary and flip ladders are the most common designs. You can also add rails and customize the number of steps you want. Three- and four-step ladders are typically what most people need.

Regardless of the design you choose, there are some need-to-know basics when installing a ladder on your dock. Read on to learn how to install a dock ladder.

Steps to Take When Installing a Dock Ladder

Before getting started on your installation project, first gather the materials you’ll need for the job. Ensure you have the appropriate dock hardware for the ladder installation and all other materials, tools and safety equipment. Then follow the steps below. Always refer to your manufacturer’s instructions as installation may vary.

Select the location for your ladder – Choose a location on your dock where the water depth allows for safe entry and exit. Don’t place it right where you’ll moor your boat. The ladder should be somewhere free from obstructions and at a sufficient depth to accommodate various water levels.

Prepare to mount the ladder – First position the mounting brackets in your selected location and mark the mounting holes with a pencil. Then create pilot holes with your drill bit to help guide the screws into the dock.

Attach mounting brackets, wood and steps – Next, securely attach your mounting brackets using your pilot holes as a guide. You will attach either wood or pipes to the mounting brackets. The ladder steps will then be screwed into the ladder legs.

Check for stability – Lastly, test the ladder to ensure it’s securely fastened to the dock. The ladder should be stable with no wobbling or movement.

Once your dock ladder is installed, it’s time to start enjoying it. Be sure to conduct regular inspections and tighten any loose screws or bolts as needed. If you see signs of wear or rusting, replace deteriorated parts right away.
